Basking Sharks

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Out with a group of wildlife enthusiasts on Thursday evening; we cruised out past the Old Head around to the west side of the bay.  On route we came across three Basking Sharks feeding, just yards from the Head itself.  Just east of them we spotted six common dolphins feeding on possibly mackerel or a herring shoal; the gannets gave it away.  I went up onto the fly bridge hoping to get a good angle but just managed to get this quick shot before they dived.  I know it’s only a fin; but this was one of the largest Basking sharks I’ve seen in a while. We went on then to one of the rock stacks west of the Head which was literally covered from top to bottom with birds; check out the pictures.  Light conditions were not ideal, but at least they give you some idea of the wildlife activity out in the waters of Kinsale at the moment.
